Some Republicans in the state wonder whether the former Democrat — Grayson voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 — is a true conservative.
[Some conservatives wary of Grayson by Jack Brammer]
Many are wondering which of Bill Clinton’s political positions attracted Trey Grayson to his candidacy in 1992. His campaign promised initiatives such as more government control of healthcare, abortions on demand, and gay rights legislation. Nonetheless, Trey registered as a Democrat and actively supported the Clinton campaign.
Why, then, did he suddenly decide to become a Republican? We can speculate that he transfered to the GOP as an ambitious career move after southern Democrats suffered major defeat in the 1994 elections. After all, Trey Grayson said, “Now would be a good time to be a Republican” when kicking off his campaign.

He doesn’t care about party or values. All he cares about is a career in the establishment.
It’s so obvious Trey doesn’t care about the PRINCIPLES of the GOP. He’s only there because it most benefits him most at this present time, and it’s that same opportunism we’d see on important government-growing bills as he trades principles for power. If Grayson is elected, I think it would be interesting to see how many people switched parties to ensure this socialist was elected over a principled GOP member. Of course, Grayson would probably claim he’s “growing the party.”
Don’t forget that Clinton back in ‘92 stated on the campaign trail that he wanted to ban “assault weapons” (semi-automatic rifles). Grayson supported him in spite of this fact. As a US Senator, he would probably vote for more gun control laws. The NRA has endorsed him in his Secretary of State campaigns, but should end this practice at this time since Gun Owners of America (GOA) has endorsed Rand.
Trey is a democrat at heart
I wonder if Obama will come to Kentucky to campaign for Trey
I am furious really.. who does this Trey guy think he is? He just becomes a republican when it is politically helpful! Forget this liberal democrat!
I’m sorry but flip-flopping candidates like Trey have no principles and do not deserve to get our vote!
WOW! Trey IS a liberal!
I was there campaigning AGAINST Bill Clinton at that time. I can tell you that his platform was deeply disturbing, and his support for higher taxes, abortion programs, and a naive foreign policy made me pray that he never became president. Unfortunately he was elected because of people like Trey supporting him.
agree with omni..
someone who campaigned for clinton and suddenly claims to be a conservative? i am not falling for another arlen specter
This confirms it. I will definitely not support Trey.
Rand Paul has my vote for being a lifelong conservative Republican.
Trey Grayson was twenty years old in 1992. I’m not sure if he supported Clinton or not, but if he did, who cares? He wouldn’t be the first person who grew up, got smart and became a Republican!!
I do care because he has not proven that he is a true conservative and it seems he just changed to the GOP as a political move! If you look above he even said “now is a good time to be a republican!”
Yes it was 1992 when he campaigned for Bill Clinton but he has supported democratic programs as recently as the last few years
Speaking at environmental conferences and going to left-wing institutes for example
Didn’t realize Trey campaigned for Bill Clinton…
I imagine it is. Very good stuff, glad I found this.
